The hard truth

70% of South African businesses fail in their first year.

Most don't fail because the product is bad or the market is small. They fail because the admin closes them first.

I lost my first business to this exact problem. Not one big thing. A pile-up. CIPC filings I didn't know were due. Provisional tax deadlines I missed. PAYE submissions that slipped the moment I hired my first employee. Clients who paid 60 days late while my suppliers needed 30. By the time I caught up, the penalties were bigger than the business.

Most of what killed me wasn't hard work or a bad product. It was admin I didn't know how to stay on top of, and software I couldn't afford to keep once I needed it most.

I built BMS so the next founder doesn't have to choose between staying compliant and staying open.

FAQ

Common questions

Which banks does BMS work with?+

Every South African bank. Upload statements from FNB, Standard Bank, Absa, Nedbank, Capitec, Discovery, TymeBank - or forward your bank's transaction notification emails to BMS for automatic capture.

I'm not VAT-registered. Is BMS for me?+

Yes. Most SA SMEs are below the R1m VAT threshold. BMS treats you correctly: invoices say 'INVOICE' (not 'TAX INVOICE'), the Brain doesn't push VAT registration unnecessarily, and the calendar only shows the obligations that apply to you.

Do I still need an accountant?+

Maybe - but you'll need them less. BMS handles the day-to-day bookkeeping. If you don't have an accountant, our marketplace will match you with vetted SA professionals.

Can I import from Sage / Xero / QuickBooks?+

Yes for invoices, clients, and chart of accounts via CSV. Bank-statement formats from all major SA banks supported.

What about my data?+

BMS is hosted in South Africa, on POPIA-compliant infrastructure. You can export everything as CSV any time. Your data is yours - there's no lock-in.
